A broad spectrum of programs and educational material is offered to a diverse audience ranging from community members, children and students to hospital staff, physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.

A project funded through collaboration with PepsiCo/Frito-Lay and the National Council of La Raza, to assist high school youth in grades 11th & 12th in preparing themselves for higher education and a career in business/finance.

Educational Programs

  • Speaking to your Patients (Platicando con su Paciente): Spanish language medical terminology course to reduce linguistic and cultural barriers between health care providers and their limited English-speaking patients.

  • Training & Technical Assistance (Proyecto Informar) Cultural Competency: Group training modules that emphasizes cultural competency of health care providers and institutions to better serve Latino communities.
  • Diabetes Prevention/Education: Promotes diabetes awareness, & culturally appropriate education for material development.

  • Colorectal Cancer Awareness: A national initiative for cancer awareness, prevention and early detection.
  • Comenzando Bien: A program for prenatal health education for Hispanic women & their families.
  • Prenatal Health Education: Promotes the health and well-being of the mother and the developing fetus through educational and counseling activities.

  • Tobacco Control: Provides a variety of services focused on educating the Latino community regarding tobacco use, including cessation, reduction in environmental smoke risks and attitudinal changes regarding tobacco policies.

  • Lead Poisoning Prevention: Educates the community on lead poison and the use of table wear products.

  • Latino Technology Network: MAHEC is 1 of 13 Alliance partners, the Alliance partners are dedicated to tackling the problems of educational deficiencies and access to technology and training.

  • Fish Contamination Education: The goal is to provide outreach and education activities focused on fish contamination issues related to the coastal regions of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Click Here for Spanish webpage of FCEC.

  • Poison Control Program: Educates Latinos on how to utilize the Poison Control Center.

Community Collaboratives

  • Vacunas Para La Familia: An immunization outreach and community education project to educate Latino families about vaccine preventable diseases and direct them to needed services.

  • Community Health Educators (Promotores de Salud): Community members that have been trained by MAHEC in specific areas (i.e. diabetes, tobacco education, breast cancer awareness, etc.) to educate and advocate in the community.

  • Teen Pregnancy Prevention: An East Los Angeles Community Partnership designed to address teenage pregnancy and fatherless in the community.

  • Parks, Recreation & Health: A project in partnership with the RAND Corporation to impact community health in Los Angeles County through improvements in local recreational area and implementation of strategies for better access & use of these areas.

  • Translation and Adaptation Services: Promotes and facilitates cultural and linguistic competent patient education services through the development and translation/adaptation of health education materials.

  • Family Financial Literacy Program:

  • Maravilla Foundation Teen Education Program:

  • First 5 California: An outreach program to parents that have children 0-5 years of age regarding child development and reading readiness.

  • Healthy Families: Medi-Cal/Healthy Families application assistance.
  • Cal-PEN: A statewide educational network for health care professionals addressing the gaps in disaster and bioterrorism. More Info.
