Programs
- Speaking to your Patients
(Platicando con su Paciente): Spanish
language medical terminology course to reduce
linguistic and cultural barriers between health
care providers and their limited English-speaking
patients.
- Training & Technical
Assistance (Proyecto Informar) Cultural
Competency: Group training modules that emphasizes
cultural competency of health care providers
and institutions to better serve Latino communities.
- Diabetes
Prevention/Education: Promotes diabetes
awareness, & culturally appropriate education
for material development.
- Colorectal Cancer Awareness:
A national initiative for cancer awareness,
prevention and early detection.
- Comenzando
Bien: A program for prenatal health education
for Hispanic women & their families.
- Prenatal Health Education:
Promotes the health and well-being of the mother
and the developing fetus through educational
and counseling activities.
- Tobacco Control: Provides
a variety of services focused on educating the
Latino community regarding tobacco use, including
cessation, reduction in environmental smoke
risks and attitudinal changes regarding tobacco
policies.
- Lead Poisoning Prevention:
Educates the community on lead poison and the
use of table wear products.
- Latino Technology Network:
MAHEC is 1 of 13 Alliance partners, the Alliance
partners are dedicated to tackling the problems
of educational deficiencies and access to technology
and training.
- Fish Contamination
Education: The goal is to provide outreach
and education activities focused on fish contamination
issues related to the coastal regions of Los
Angeles and Orange Counties. Click

Educates Latinos on how to utilize the Poison
Control Center.

- Vacunas
Para La Familia: An immunization outreach
and community education project to educate Latino
families about vaccine preventable diseases
and direct them to needed services.

Health Educators (Promotores de Salud):
Community members that have been trained by
MAHEC in specific areas (i.e. diabetes, tobacco
education, breast cancer awareness, etc.) to
educate and advocate in the community.

Pregnancy Prevention: An East Los Angeles
Community Partnership designed to address teenage
pregnancy and fatherless in the community.
- Parks,
Recreation & Health: A project in partnership
with the RAND Corporation to impact community
health in Los Angeles County through improvements
in local recreational area and implementation
of strategies for better access & use of
these areas.
